A project with Cally Trench and Tineke Bruijnzeels

Calendar and guest artistsExhibition and open day in ReadingExhibition and open day in Anières

Drawing every day was sometimes a lifeline, sometimes an obligation, and most days enjoyable. I loved drawing the same subject for a week, and sometimes regretted that I had to choose a different subject the next week. This year has shown me a new direction for my studio practice: I am fascinated by the movement of light and wind on water. Drawing with 52 artists has been inspiring and motivating. Cally has received all the drawings from the 51 guest artists, so I have only seen the selected three scans on the website. I am very much looking forward to seeing the actual drawings at the exhibition! Tineke Bruijnzeels

Drawing the same thing every day for a week meant that I really had to look at it, to study it, to try to analyse it. Drawing became a way of thinking. Sometimes the drawings seemed to get less attractive as the week progressed, more analytical but less beautiful. I often returned to the same topic a week or two later: my hands and feet in particular. The guest artists added a whole layer of interest. Until their drawings arrived in the post I had no idea what to expect, and I was amazed by their beauty, ingenuity and intensity. Cally Trench

From August 2013 to August 2014, Cally Trench, an English artist living in Buckinghamshire, and Tineke Bruijnzeels, a Dutch artist living in Switzerland each made a drawing every day, and sent the drawings to each other in weekly batches of seven. Ten years earlier, Cally (in Buckinghamshire) and Tineke (who was then living in France) did a similar project, from August 2003 to August 2004.

In 2013-2014, fifty-one guest artists joined in the project, each making drawings for one week. The guest artists followed the same rules as Cally and Tineke: one drawing a day for each of seven consecutive days, A6 vertical format, any drawing medium on any kind of paper, observational drawings, and the same subject/topic/theme/question for all seven drawings.
