The tulip drawings were done on cartridge paper with a Conte Pierre Noire Drawing Pencil 2B. I used my left hand, although right-handed, because I like the unpredictability! I have always loved the way tulips become more interesting as they die, the way they start with a very neat and tidy shape, slowly bending and then becoming more twisted and gnarled with time, for me, just as beautiful as when fresh.

The Wall and the Books, 1961 ...
Music, states of happiness, mythology, faces belabored by time, certain twilights and certain places try to tell us something, or have said something we should not have missed, or are about to say something; this imminence of a revelation which does not occur is, perhaps, the aesthetic phenomenon. (Jorge Luis Borges)
